A total television audience of 66 million watched the Göteborg 2013 European Athletics Indoor Championships in March, an increase on the viewing figures of the previous two editions.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Repucom confirmed in a report to European Athletics that the cumulative figure (excluding news audiences) is 6 million higher than for the Paris 2011 European Athletics Indoor Championships and 9 million higher than Torino 2009.
Broadcasters in 23 European countries and pan-European channel Eurosport produced about 300 hours of coverage for the world’s biggest athletics event since the Olympic Games in London.
European Athletics President Hansjörg Wirz said, “These impressive television figures show that Göteborg 2013 maintained the momentum of our sport on the continent following the memorable athletics programme during London 2012 and emphasises athletics’ continued popularity among television sports fans.
“We are now looking forward to excellent television coverage of the Gateshead 2013 European Athletics Team Championships on 22-23 June, with current broadcast intentions looking very promising,” said President Wirz.
Prague hosts the next European Athletics Indoor Championships in 2015.
