The Cape Town Marathon 2012 takes place on Sunday 23 September and has attracted a strong field including Zimbabwean Olympic marathoner Mike Fokorini and South African George Ntshiliza who won the Two Oceans Ultra-Marathon in 2011.
Fokorini, who has a marathon best of 2:13:17 hours, placed 11th at the Beijing Olympics and finished 6th in the Two Oceans Ultra-Marathon in 2010. Fellow Zimbabwean Gilbert Mutandiero, who qualified for the London 2012 Olympic Games by finishing 4th at the Cape Town Marathon 2011, has a personal best of 2:17:17.
Other featured runners include South African Lungile Gongqa, who finished 5th in the Cape Town Marathon last year in a PB of 2:17:30, and South African duathlete Jason Spong.
In the womenââ¬Ës field the athletes to keep an eye on are Tanith Maxwell who represented South Africa at the London Olympics 2012 and elite veterans Gillian Sieling, Ursula Frans and Debbie Perry.
Race organisers have announced that a special MyCiti shuttle service will operate to ferry runners to the start of the Marathon and 10km races. Runners are encouraged to park near the Cape Town Stadium - there are designated parking areas and details will be provided at registration.
The shuttle service will run between Stadium Station in Green Point and Thibault Square Station every 3 minutes between 05:15 and 06:15. Marshalls at Thibault Square Station will direct runners to the race start in Adderley Street.
Tickets for the shuttle service are available for purchase from registration at the Sea Point Civic Centre on Friday 21 September between 10am and 7pm; and on Saturday 22 September between 10am and 5pm, at R5 per ticket.
Residents of Green Point should also take note that Vlei and Fritz Sonnenberg Roads will be temporarily closed to traffic on Sunday September 23.
Registration and number collection is at the Sea Point Civic Centre on Friday 21 September between 10am and 7pm and on Saturday 22 September between 10am and 5pm. Friday is the final opportunity for runners to enter the marathon or 10km, and to upgrade or downgrade between the marathon and 10km race.
The marathon festival weekend also includes a 5km Fun Run and a 5-x 4.2km relay for clubs, companies and schools on Saturday 22 September. The events, supported by the City of Cape Town, Cape Town Tourism, Western Cape Government, Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, and Peninsula Beverages, provide a wonderful opportunity for competitors to get involved in a big city event while promoting a healthy, active, outdoor lifestyle.
