Athletics South Africa (ASA) and South African Masters Athletics (SAMA) have joined forces to combine the SA Marathon Championships with the SAMA Marathon Championships this year. This year's event takes place in Oudtshoorn on 3 February.
"This is a long-overdue development, with Athletics SA and SAMA joining forces to host a championship. It can only be to the benefit of athletics in the country, as most road runners in South Africa are over the age of 30 and should be eligible to compete at the SAMA events. We anticipate that this will be the start of a closer relationship between Athletics SA and SAMA, to the benefit of everyone", said James Evans, the president of Athletics South Africa.
While the event was originally scheduled for George, it had to be moved due to road works preventing the marathon from taking place on the original route.
Athletes who were not chosen by their provinces to compete in the team may enter as individual athletes, but will have to pay a R50 entry fee. Athletes must enter through their respective provinces, with the entries reaching ASA by close of business on Monday, 14 January.
All athletes interested in entering must meet the following qualifying standards at a road race between 1 January 2012 and 13 January 2013.
Masters athletes will compete in 5 year age categories.
Open Men 02:40
Open Women 03:40
