 ISTAF Berlin meeting - Germany

The sixth meeting on the Golden League circuit kept all 5 contenders for the 'Golden Jackpot' on course towards their 'Golden Payday'.

Following are the race reports from the middle and distance events :

The Women's 5000m race report
The women's 5000m race brought Ethiopia's Berhane Adere, to Berlin to build onto her lead in the Grand Prix standings. In a race where the pace was 'even' to start with, it produced a number of 'good' times for the athletes who were to finish behind the tall 'gazelle like' athlete from Ethiopia.

Once the pace-setter had dropped out, Adere took up the running and began to apply a rhythm to the race which would set-up the other athletes for sub15min performances.

With Adere having a comfortable win in 14:41.43, she was followed by 'countrywoman' Werknesh Kidane in 14:43.53 with Australian Benita Johnson finishing 3rd in 14:47.60, a new National Record [NR] and the first time an athlete from her country had broken 15 minutes on the track. Joanne Pavey of Britain finished 5th in a creditable 14:48.66.

A further 4 athletes broke 15min, bringing the total to 8 under the barrier. Turkey's Ebru Kavaklioglu of Turkey failed to break 15min by the narrowest of margins however her 15:00.45 was a new NR. [ results below ]

The Men's 1500 race report
Lagat close to El Gerrouj1500m Men "LINE UP". Same call, same event and same result. Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco has dominated the 1500m this year with greater ease than he has done in the previous year. After his loss to Noah Ngeny [Kenya], his disappointment led him to think of moving up in distance. However after his close run to his world record last year, chased all the way by Bernard Lagat, he chose to stick to the 1500m. His decision has proved that he is without doubt the World's present and best ever 1500m runner. With no disrespect to Lagat, El Guerrouj is without peer in this event and it comes as no 'chance' that he is the only Middle or Distance runner to be in the final 4 who will keep a share of the jackpot.

Berlin saw El Guerrouj apply the pressure from 400m to go and it will be interesting to see the Moroccan's approach to future Championship event races. Next year will give him the opportunity to see whether he has built on his 'frailty' when it comes MAJOR finals?

After the pacesetters took the field through splits of 400/55:43 and 800/1:52.06, it was only the Kenyan and Moroccan rival left in contention. They were joined by Kamal Boulahfane of Algeria [which looked promising] however his challenged 'faded' completely over the last 400m with him eventually finishing in 9th place. El Guerrouj's last 400m was 54:09, which was enough for him to take victory with relative ease.

El Guerrouj's finishing time was 3:30.00, with Lagat in 3:32.91. Such, was the ase of his victory. [ results below ]

The Women's 1500m race report
Yet again Süreyya Ayhan of Turkey showed the field a clean pair of heels. On this occasion she went out even harder than at Brussels , going through the first 400m in 60.67. Actually, this race was over 18seconds into the race, when the rest of the field failed to cover the opening 'salvo' of the pacesetter. A shame really.

Yes, it did look good when Suzy Favor Hamilton [USA] made her impressive sprint for the finish. However, those in the know, will soon see 'that flattering to deceive' does not win races. If they want to beat Ayhan, then they need to be in contact with her with 400m to go, as she was able to cover her last 400m in 61.52. This after going through 800m in 2:07.41. 800m to 1200 [3:12.50] was covered in 65.09, so the 'ambling' pack was able to close on the brave front runner. I say ambling, because to let an athlete go as early as 18seconds into a race is ludicrous, unless they think they are not as good as her?

After Favor Hamilton's impressive sprint, she was able to come home in 3:59.40, a creditable performance, but not the performance of the race.

Ayhan had the pleasure of setting a new meeting record with her 3:58.43. Yet again, Alesya Turova [Bel], used her powerful finishing speed, combined with strength, to finish in 3rd place, with 4:01.97. [ results below ]

The Men's 800m race report
This event gave Andre Bucher [Switzerland] and Nils Schumann [Ger] an opportunity to shine in front of the German crowds, however it was Wilfred Bungei [KEN] who shone the most. The Kenyan won in 1:44.62 with countryman, William Yiampoy finishing 2nd,pushing Bucher further down the 'pecking' order into 3rd spot.

Schumann, who had recently run a PB at the meeting in Brussels, could only manage 5th. But, such is the standard of 800m running in the world at present [with at least 6 faster athletes this year missing] the German finished in a creditable 1:45.41.

As is the want of all 800m runners these days, the first 400m was covered in 50.80. Bungai was well placed from the offset and it looked as though he had no intentions of relinquishing his position throughout the race. The 'gritty' athlete took over the front running duties from the pacesetter and was never 'headed' as he powered his way to the finish. The athletes in his 'wake' were left to battle for the remaining places, and this produced dramatic sprints for the finish. [ results below ]

The Men's 5000m race report
The Men's 5000m, could so easily have been a race of no interest, if it were not for 'aspirations' of German 'favourite' Dieter Baumann and the desire to win of Ukraine's Sergiy Lebid.

After the pacesetters had taken the field through the 1st Km in 2:36.98, a tactical feel to the event began to develop with none of the 'big guns' prepared to be amongst the frontrunners. Baumann, however wanted to be up front and he quickly found himself amongst the first 4, who were covering the pace provided. By 3K the pace had dropped to 7:55.75 and all the sparkle of a fast time was gone.

The field was bunched going through 4Km and it was great to see Baumann take the lead with 700m to go. The penultimate lap was covered in 61 seconds, however this was to prove to be the undoing of Baumann. With 400m to go the German was passed from all directions and he soon faded out of contention. Going down the backstraight, the blonde head of the Ukrainian athlete, Lebid, shot out from the pack. However, he was never able to establish a lead that would take him to victory and he was soon pounced on by the race winner Luke Kipkosgei of Kenya.

Once the Kenyan took the lead, he never looked as though he would succumb to any challengers. With 50m to go, Benjamin Limo, considered it was time to win the race, and his finishing burst took him past all his rivals from 5/6th to 2nd, just .36 off the winner. Kipkosgei's time was 13:10.41 compared to Limo's 13:10.77, with Lebid 3rd in 13:10.78.

Benjamin Limo will continue to be an 'enigma' to me, as he shows no interest in producing performances that will place him in the category of 'The Greats'. I for one believe he is well capable of producing times close to 30 seconds faster than Berlin's winning time. Whether, he ever emerges from his present state of mind to an athlete of greatness will be left to Father Time.[ results below ]
