In 1984, a certain Steve Jones of Wales, made his debut in Chicago, in one of the most competitive fields assembled after the LA Olympics. Jones went on to set a world record of 2:08:05.
The following year he returned to win again in 2:07:13 (missing Carlos Lopes WR of 2:07:12 set in Rotterdam earlier in the year) No one would have known at the time that Jones’ time would still be the UK Record some 29 years later.

What must be remembered, as can be seen by the photo image of Jones at the London Marathon in 1985, with Charlie Spedding alongside him, was that Jones worked a full time job in the Royal Air Force
