Athletissima Diamond League Meeting, Lausanne – 23 August 2012
Valerie Adams continued to dominate the world shot put scene winning at the Diamond League meeting with a best of 20.95m.

The double Olympic gold medallist started with 20.73m with her top performance coming in the last round. Adams also set a meeting record improving on the mark of 20.37m set by Mandy Krieger of East Germany in 1989.

Adams series was 20.73m, 20.28m, x, x, x, 20.95m. Michelle Carter of USA was second with 19.60m, with London Olympic silver medallist Yevgeniya Kolodko of Russia third 18.64m.

Nick Willis was eleventh in the 1500m in 3m 34.85s won by Silas Kiplagat in 3m 31.78s from Mekonnen Gebremedhin of Ethiopia 3m 31.86s and American Matthew Centrowitz who was third in a PB 3m 31.96s.

At the same meeting Yohan Blake became the equal second fastest with Tyson Gay over 100m with a PB 9.69s. Gay was second in 9.83s while Usain Bolt opted for the 200m which he won in 19.58s.

Valerie Adams won the shot put with 20.52m, nearly two metres further than Michelle Carter of USA. Her series was 20.52m, 20.18m, 20.25m, x, 20.21m, 20.49m.

Nick Willis ran a personal best 1000m in finishing third in 2m 16.58s. He was just one hundredth of a second outside John Walker’s New Zealand national record set in Oslo Norway in July 1980. The time is faster than Peter Snell’s best of 2m 16.6s recorded at Western Springs Auckland in November 1964, a hand timed result which is listed alongside Walker’s record. The Linz race was won by Kenyan Benson Seurei in 2m 16.39s from Canadian Nate Brannan 2m 16.52s. Brannan’s time is a Canadian national record.
