The Diskobolos Defence Force Sport Grounds outside Kimberley will be the venue for the annual SA 10km Championships taking place on 19 May 2012. All 17 athletics provinces have entered teams, which should mean fast racing.
A fast, flat out and back course should ensure fast times.
The menââ¬â¢s race will have the top three finishers of 2011 lining up, whilst the womenââ¬â¢s race will be open as defending champion Irvette van Blerk is focussing her attention on the marathon, having set a qualifying time for the Olympic Games.
Other familiar faces will include marathon SA record holder Gert Thys, Coolboy Ngamole, Elroy Gelant, Boy Soke, Stephen Mokoka who has recently reached the Olympic Qualifying A-standard on the track in the 10 000m, Tshamano Setone, Kgosi Tsosane, Xolisa Tyali and defending champion Lucky Mohale.
The womenââ¬â¢s SA Marathon Champion Charne Bosman will also line up in Kimberley on Saturday along with the Phalula twins and Nolene Conrad, who specializes in 1500m, 3000m steeplechase and 5000m, to add to the number of track athletes that have entered the championships.
A total of R104 900 has been made available in prize money excluding the R25 000 for SA Records and R25 000 for World top 50 performances (28:03 for men and 32:09 for women). The winner of the 10km race, both men and women, will receive R10 000 with R7500 going to the silver medallist and R5000 for finishing 3rd.
The SA 10km Championships will start at 07h00 with an open race starting at 08h00.
