The SA 10km Championships on Sunday, 19 May will be hosted by Kwazulu Natal Athletics but wonââ¬â¢t only include the SA Championships. It will be hosted in conjunction with a mass participation event for athletes that have not been selected by their provinces, but wish to compete at this event.
The SA 10km Championship main race will start at 08:00 with the route starting and finishing at the Kings Park Athletics Stadium in Ethekwini. The route will consist of a double 5km lap. The championship athletes will have the benefit of spectator support as they race though the stadium after one lap and a unique experience of running around the Durbanââ¬â¢s iconic Moses Mahbida stadium.
In 2012 Elroy Gelant won the menââ¬â¢s title in 28:36 while Irvette van Zyl (formally van Blerk) crossed the line first in the senior womenââ¬â¢s category, her time recorded at 33:21. But this year new champions will be crowned as neither of the senior defending champions will compete at the championships. Gelant is currently busy preparing for his European leg of track and field athletics while Van Blerk will run a 10km race in India.
