18yrs old, new runner who started to go back to the gym... - godin21 - 10-06-2009 Hi, I go to the gym regularly to work out and all, and my main goal is basically to be healthier, and burn some fat. I use to weight about 220 or 230 pounds when I was younger; Iâââ‰â¢m now 18, 5'9 190 pounds. I actually gained weight, because I was 175, but I started college (freshman), and gained allot during my first semester. Anyways, I want to be able to run 3 miles in under 18 minutes. Why? Because back when I was in high school I was certain I was going to join the Marines. So I trained on my own and lost all the weight because of it. One of the things I needed to be able to do was run 3 miles in under 18 minutes to be eligible for Recon in the Marines. I went to college instead and gained weight, but I started going back to the gym, and I still hope to run 3 miles in 18 minutes or under, along with my other goal of going back down to 170 or 180 of good muscle. I'm still thinking about going into the Marines or Navy to help pay for college and all, or even after college because having a military background would really help in the career I'm aiming for, FBI. Right now Iâââ‰â¢m able to run a good mile in 10 minutes. Itâââ‰â¢s bad I know, at least I think, and I know itâââ‰â¢s going to take a long time; which is why I need help forming a good schedule so I can run 3 miles in 18 minutes or less. 18yrs old, new runner who started to go back to the gym... - TheEd - 10-06-2009 Hi godin and Welcome how long have you got before you need to achieve sub 18 minutes and what training, if any have you been doing up and till now, please? Thanks TheEd 18yrs old, new runner who started to go back to the gym... - godin21 - 10-06-2009 I don't really have a deadline, i just want to be able to accomplish my goal. If its possible maybe before September? I'm on vacation from college till August 26, so i guess that could be the deadline. But again, i don't really have a dead line. I have been mostly weight lifting, basic stuff, working out my body. Working on my chest, and back a lot. My real goal is to be more lean and toned, so my wiehgt lifting is to gain a bit more muscle and burn fat. I know that i needed to put more cardio into my workout, and i suck at cardio. So that's why i have set this goal, to have a good schedule around the runnign so that i can complete all my goals, burn fat with the running, build muscle with the lifting. thnx for the quick response btw. 18yrs old, new runner who started to go back to the gym... - TheEd - 11-06-2009 Hi godin considering that you have not done any weight bearing exercise to speak of we would highly recommend that you start on the Beginner's Program as this will guide you in the correct way once you have reached a certain level then you can consider training to achieve your goal, the program does develop you to preparing for a 5km TheEd |
