Wednesday, 7 March 2012 - One of the countryââ¬â¢s premier road running ultra events, the Old Mutual Om Die Dam Marathon, takes place in the North West Province on Saturday 17 March, starting and finishing at the Hartbeespoort High School in Schoemansville.
This popular event offers runners the flagship 50km ultra, 21km, 10km run/walk, and the Dave Muller 5km fun run/walk.
Entries for the 50km ultra event have closed but runners can still enter other distances either online at entrytime.com or at selected Sportsman Warehouse outlets in Johannesburg and Pretoria. Entry forms are also available from the race office in Hartbeespoort. Only entries for the 21km, 10km and 5km fun run will be taken at registration and on race day.
Joy Khaole, head of sponsorships at Old Mutual South Africa, says: ââ¬ÅOld Mutual has been supporting this race for 19 years. We are pleased with the increasing number of participants for the 50km distance, which indicates the growing reputation of this race within the running community.
Runners must collect their race numbers at registration at the Hartbeespoort High School on Friday, 16 March or on race day. They are invited to bring their family and friends to registration as there will be a race expo with entertainment, food stalls, a beer garden, plus a Kids Zone.
The ultra, which starts at 06h00, takes runners around the Hartbeespoort Dam in the Madibeng municipality. Walkers are welcome to take part and are eligible for prize money, but they must be able to complete the ultra event within the seven-hour cut-off.
The 21km starts at 06h05 with a cut-off time of four hours. Those who do not finish the 21km within the cut-off time can finish at their leisure but will not qualify for a medal. Both the 10km and 5km fun run start at 06h20.
The Metsi a Me (ââ¬Ëmy waterââ¬â¢) remediation project is the eventââ¬â¢s official charity. Most of the funds raised through this event will be donated to this project, which focuses on cleaning and restoring the natural balance and beauty of Hartbeespoort Dam. The rest of the proceeds will be donated to Meerhof School, a local school in the area for children with physical and learning disabilities.
Khaole adds: ââ¬ÅWe encourage participants to run for more than themselves by joining Old Mutual in supporting projects that can make a meaningful contribution in the communities in which we operate.ââ¬Â
