Lanzarote 14th June 2015 – The 2015 Lanzarote Wine Run and Food Festival, proved yet again to be a growing success for both the runners, walkers and for those who attended the event as spectators.
Merino Star of Wine Run 2015
Yet again, Aroa Merino, proved to be the star of the show. Just as in the Wine Run 2014, where she finished in 6th place overall, to show her star status, the tiny athlete produced an even higher performance. Shooting to the front early in the race, to lead the men over the first 10km. She would eventually be overhauled and would finish 3rd overall and 10 minutes ahead of the 2nd Women.
Wine Run Kids Races – Saturday 13th June 2015
Before we dabble further into the main race, let us first mention the success of the Wine Run Kids Races of the evening before, held on the streets in the town of Uga. For the family, the Wine Run organisers provided an opportunity for the children to participate, with a street run for the various age groups.
Great fun was had by the youthful participants.
Wine Run 2015 – La Florida to Uga 22.3km
Having gone to the front from the ‘get go’, Merino, a 5 time winner of this event, was passed by Matías Ojeda Montesdeoca and Jachinso Hernández Barrera later on. Ojeda would go on to post a winning time of 81:43 with Moreno in 3rd just 28 seconds further back in 82:11. A truly outstanding result on a non too easy course through the splendid Lanzarote settings.
Women Wine Run
Esther Rodríguez took 2nd in 92:58 comfortably ahead of Piia Doyle who only took the 3rd place position in the last kilometer, posting a time of 01:42:17.
With the finish and start changing from year to year, it is difficult to compare courses and times. This year’s course contained far more soft ‘picon’ underfoot, which would make for a more tiring journey.
That aside, the setting of the route is always stunning, as it weaves its way through and across the vineyards.
Fine Food and Music Festival
With the finish in Uga in 2015, the Fine Food Festival was set in a more congested space, however that didn’t seem to put the party revellers off from attending an afternoon of food and rock music.
This event continues to grow in stature, be sure to part of Wine Run 2016
