Jeff Riseley takes 1000m record

The 14-year-old Australian and Oceania 1000m record of Grant Cremer is no longer, with Glasgow 2014 bound Jeff Riseley (Vic) clocking 2:16.09 to improve the previous mark by half a second at the 53rd Golden Spike in Ostrava (CZE).

Delivering third place in the race, the performance launched the European campaign of the two-time Olympian and provides insight into his form ahead of competition at the 2014 Commonwealth Games next month.

Obviously elated by the performance, Riseley tweeted “On Easter Monday I thought I might never run again. Now I’m the National and Oceania record holder for the 1000m. Thanks Andrew Russell (coach) and the team!”

Riseley’s run continues a strong start to the year for the 27-year-old. The winner of two medals, including gold in the 1500m, at the 92nd Australian Athletics Championships, he was automatically selected to compete in the 800m and metric mile at Glasgow 2014 and has since continued his preparation to compete at what will be his first Commonwealth Games.
