Valerie Adams maintained her unbeaten record this season in her lead up to defending her Olympic title, with a winning shot put of 20.97m in Tomblaine. Adams was consistent with all attempts over 20 metres (20.41, 20.62, 20.26, 20.29, 20.97, 20.54). Jessica Cerival of France, the 2009 Mediterranean Games champion, was second with 16.67m.
Meanwhile arch rival Nadzeya Ostapchuk improved on her own national record in Grodno Belarus on 6 July with a put of 21.39m. She had three over 21 metres in the competition, 21.32m in round two, 21.05m in the third and the 21.39m in the sixth round. Natallia Mikhnevich, 2006 world indoor and European champion, was second with a season’s best of 19.77m.
