ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - (November 20, 2011) - Jessica Crate was the winner of the third Women's Half Marathon St. Petersburg presented by Publix on Sunday morning in 1 hour, 22 minutes, 28 seconds. Crate was followed in second place by Loni Smith in 1:24:31 and Jessica Kennedy took third (1:25:25).
"It was inspiring to see the motivation and strength of the women running this race. As our home city, this race location has special meaning for us," said Dawna Stone, president of Women's Running Magazine and founder of the Women's Half Marathon Series. "From the first finisher to the last, it's amazing to see the celebratory spirit of our runners as they run the beautiful course to eventually cross our finish line."
The event also hosted the third Women's Running Magazine 5K and Christa Stephens was the winner in 18:16. Runner-up was Connie Medoza at 20:10 with Rachel Valentine third (21:14).
I Thought They Said Rum won the Team Category in the half-marathon distance with the fastest average runner time. Suncoast Striders came in second and Faith Runners earned third in the Team Category.
In addition to the exclusive 2-in-1 medal, half-marathon runners earned a digital medal to post and use on their social media outlets. The digital medal will allow finishers to share their accomplishment with all of their friends and family online.
Starting in downtown St. Petersburg, the scenic, walker-friendly course showcases the city at its finest. Runners experienced an incredibly scenic, flat and fast course for this race. The race finished with an unforgettable finish line party.
The Women's Running Magazine Women's Half Marathon Series is the nation's largest women's half-marathon series. The four 2012 events in Bloomington, Minn. (debut Aug. 26), Nashville, Tenn. (Sept. 22), Scottsdale/Tempe, Ariz. (Nov. 4) and St. Petersburg, Fla. (Nov. 18) are expected to host more than 24,000 runners.
The WHM Series awards all half-marathon finishers an industry first, patent-pending two-in-one medal and charm. Finishers also receive a designer goodie bag and tech tee. All events in the series begin with a two-day women-specific health and fitness expo and finish with an outdoor party complete with food, music and white linen tablecloths. Each event also includes a 5K run.
