It was with much anticipation that I arrived at Edinburgh by train from London to watch, what was to become, one of the most awesome and memorable cross country races ever run.
I had gone to Edinburgh with a few other avid runners, Wayne Smith, a top ex-SA and now GB duathlete and triathlete, His girlfriend, Jess Petersson, a world class Ironman, triathlete and 2.42 marathoner, Richard Xerri, a British athlete and triathlete, his girlfriend, Naomi Warner, a top Australian runner and Allen Barrie, an enthusiastic and very strong fell runner. Bekele defies age to take historic double double gold in Lausanne

30 March 2003 – Avenches, Lausanne Switzerland – At 20 years of age, one could forgive Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia for suffering from the pressures of trying to duplicate last year’s amazing double gold performance in Dublin. Avenches Lausanne – After Ethiopia’s successful clean sweep of the three individual titles on day one of the 31st IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Switzerland, and with the knowledge that the Ethiopians claimed all the main individual titles in 2002, a sigh of relief could be heard blowing through the Alps from the Kenyan officials. Victory sets Bekele to take double double
29 March 2003 – Avenche, Switzerland – Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele defended his short course title in spectacular ways..
This year he was not going to be the ‘surprise package of 2003’, he was a watched man, pursued by 4 Kenyans right from the start. The packing of the Kenyans in the first 10 was evident and the little Ethiopian was in for a rough ride.
However, he proved his true value as a cross country exponent when he pulled away from Kenya’s finest over the last 200m.
The manner with which he did this showed that he still carried much in the tank and tomorrow’s long course double looks like as though it may be on.
Bekele finished in a time of 11:01, 3 seconds ahead of John Kibowen with Benjamin Limo third. John Kibowen has won this title on 2 occasions previously, before the rise of Ethiopia and the World’s brightest prospect.
