SEB Tallinn Marathon, Estonia’s biggest recreational sports event, to boast new track as three-day exercise festival from 9th to 11th September 2016
SEB Tallinn Marathon, traditionally held on the second weekend in September, for the first time boast a three-day program and a heartily updated track.
SEB Tallinn Marathon Run Festival
The introductory event on Friday, September 9, is a five-kilometer We Run Tallinn which leads participants from Freedom Square to the Old Town through city streets and park alleys, onwards to Town Hall Square, and back to the starting point via Harju Street. The increasingly popular Youth Run for 13-29 year-old recreational athletes is expected to welcome up to 3,000 participants this year.
At 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, participants competing on the all-new and exciting track of the Autumn Run – an ever-popular ten-kilometer race that in its 16 years of existence has always attracted a most versatile participant base – start on PärnuMaantee next to Freedom Square. For the first time ever, the 10-kilometer track will lead runners, walkers, and Nordic walkers to the freshly rejuvenated bohemian Kalamaja district, passing by the Seaplane Harbor, Noblessner Foundry, Patarei Prison, the Fishing Harbor, and even the Creative Hub itself. The last few kilometers run past the luxurious Rotermann City and bring the participants via Tallinn’s future main street to the finish line on Freedom Square.
Starting at 1 p.m. in the afternoon Freedom Square serves as the venue for Mesikäpp Kids Races, hosted by VennoLoosaar as the energetic Tibu (Chickling).
Sunday, September 11, is a traditional marathon day. A classic marathon kicks off at 9 a.m. on a 42.195-kilometer track and at noon participants in a half marathon embark on a track half the distance of the full marathon. The full marathon and half marathon track, also significantly updated, runs along the lines of the old track but in a reverse direction.
The start line is situated on KaarliPuiestee wherefrom the track leads to Toompuiestee. The race route runs along the perimeter of the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, passes through the contemporary City Center, and winds along Pirita Tee with its gorgeous vistas. The updated track is considerably more runner friendly as the extended ascent just before the finish line, the cobblestone stretch in the Old Town, walkways in Schnelli Park and the precipitous race bridge across Nunne Street will have to be surmounted no more. Marathon runners undertake two laps while half marathon participants have to tackle one lap. All those that finish the marathon or half marathon receive a nice medal with all-new design!
In recent years, SEB Tallinn Marathon has stood out as Estonia’s largest recreational sports even and the most well-known marathon. Last year, the grand sports event welcomed a total of 19,559 recreational athletes from as many as 49 countries.
