Tegla Loroupe for Copenhagen Marathon
The former World Record Holder over the Marathon and first female athlete below the 2:21 barrier, is set for the Nykredit Copenhagen Marathon on May 22nd, 2011.Tegla Loroupe, the original Kenyan marathon trailblazer for African women, who was the first women from Africa to win the New York marathon, comes to Copenhagen on a mission.
Not only does the previous World Record holder over 20 – 25 – 30k and the marathon want to win but also to make people aware of her foundation.
The Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation is the cause that Dr. Loroupe puts her passion into, in the exact same way that propelled the tiny athlete to world record performances over the distance.
After winning in America on 2 occasions, she turned her attention to aiming at the World Record and in March 1998, when Loroupe ran a half marathon time of 67:32, the world knew that her next marathon could be successful. On the 9th of April in Rotterdam, she blazed to the first sub 2:21 clocking in history and a new world record of 2:20:47.
In 1999, the record was lowered to 2:20:43 in Berlin.
Thereafter the diminutive East African athlete won in London and over the next 5 years wins in Rome , Lausanne, Cologne and Leipzig were added to her list of cities conquered.
And in 2011, Loroupe looks to add to her formidable list of city achievements.
Copenhagen awaits and never before has the city had such a high caliber athlete line up to seek glory both during and after the event.
Loroupe’s strive for victory is Nykredit Copehagen Marathon 2011’s gain
