The Ostrava Golden Spike meeting on Friday 25 May could be the platform for Simon Magakwe, Oscar Pistorius and a handful other athletes to qualify for the Olympic Games, or even reach the first step in setting a qualifier ahead of the Games.
Simon Magakwe already ran the 10.18 A-standard six times in the 100m and has reached the 20.55sec required in the 200m, twice. The 27-year-old SA Champion (in the 100m and 200m) will be up against Olympic Champion and World Record holder Usain Bolt and he hopes this will push him to a new personal best. Magakwe equalled the SA 100m Record of 10.06sec on 27 April in Johannesburg. ââ¬ÅBolt will push me to a fast time yes,ââ¬Â said Magakwe ahead of the meeting in Ostrava.
Oscar Pistorius ran his first Olympic Qualifying time in the 400m on 17 March at the Gauteng North Championships when he dipped under the 45.30sec time required, clocking a time of 45.20sec. Should Pistorius dip under 45.30sec again he will be the seventh athlete to qualify for the Olympic Games.
World Championships silver medallist Caster Semenya will make her appearance in Ostrava against Pamela Jemilo (KEN), the current World Indoor Champion and 2008 Olympic Champion. Jelimo ran 1:56.94 in Doha on 11.
Other athletes to look out for in Ostrava include Mbulaeni Mulaudzi who is yet to run a qualifier after just missing the 1:45.60 qualifying mark on more than one occasion; Roscoe Engel, Hannes Dreyer Lebogang Moeng, Thuso Mpuang and Tsholofelo Thipe also line up at the Golden Spike Meeting.
Mpuang and Moeng also need to run 200m qualifying times once more to qualify for the Olympic Games, whilst the same applies for Thipe in both the 200m and 400m. Thipe will achieve her goal should she run 23.10sec in the 200m or 51.55sec in a 400m.
Caster Semenya (800m), Sunette Viljoen (javelin), Willem Coertzen (Decathlon), LJ van Zyl and Cornel Fredericks (400m hurdles) and Marc Mundell (50km race walk) have all qualified for the Olympic Games.
The Ostrava Golden Spike will be broadcast on SS7 from 18:30 to 21:00 on Friday 25 May.
