Super8 set for Scotstoun - Newsroom - 13-04-2011

Following a thrilling 2010 event, UKA has confirmed that Super8 2011 will take place at Glasgow’s Scotstoun Stadium on Thursday 9 June.

After a successful launch in 2009 in Cardiff, the unique competition format has gone from strength to strength and once again will pitch eight cities head to head in a two-hour, spectator-friendly athletics competition. The event is being delivered in partnership with Glasgow Life on behalf of the city of Glasgow.

And similarly to the 2010 event, the quick-fire athletics spectacle will be preceded by the massively popular Schools Super8 event at the same venue, giving hundreds of youngsters the chance to experience the world-class facilities at Scotstoun Stadium.

UKA Chief Executive Niels de Vos said: “I am delighted to confirm the venue for Super8 2011. Glasgow City Council took hold of the event and really brought it on last year, and it is superb that they will once again host an evening of quality athletics competition.

“The spectators at Scotstoun stadium raised the roof last year, and the Glasgow City team was the strongest challenger to the eventual winners from London. This year they must be thinking they can go that one step further and take the Super8 title.”

The Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and the Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games, Councillor Archie Graham, said: “If last year is anything to go by then Super8 will be a fantastic night of first-class athletics, with a real competitive edge due to the team format.

“Glasgow is a proud sporting city and the home crowd really got behind their team last year. It was a fantastic night for athletics and really showcased all that is good about sport in our city. I am sure that come 9 June this year the people of Glasgow will come out and roar their home team to glory.

“Events like Super8 will help us build a real sense of excitement and anticipation as we look towards the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, when the eyes of the world will be on us. It gives us a real opportunity to again show we have what it takes to deliver events of the highest quality.”
