Sonia Oââ¬â¢Sullivan for Newham London Run - Newsroom - 25-03-2011 The second staging of the Newham London Run on Sunday will have a rather special name amongst the thousands of runners on the start line as Irelandââ¬â¢s greatest ever distance runner, Sonia Oââ¬â¢Sullivan, takes to the streets for the 10k run. The Olympic Silver medalist, from Sydney in the year 2000, enjoyed an illustrious career as an elite runner and although she runs at a slightly more sedate pace these days, will no doubt be one of the first runners across the finish line on Sunday. Oââ¬â¢Sullivan will be part of a team of well known faces running for the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research ââ¬ËBanana Armyââ¬â¢ which also include actors John Michie, who plays DI Robbie Ross in the ITV detective drama Taggart, Jonny Phillips who appeared in the blockbuster film Titanic and Ray MacAllan, who has appeared in numerous TV shows including Holby City, The Bill and EastEnders. The route will take in West Ham Park, The Greenway, Stratford Park and runners will have the amazing opportunity of taking in breath-taking views of the Olympic Stadium, where the opening and closing ceremony, as well as the track and field events, will take place at the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympic Games. Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales said "With the Olympics only a year away, the race provides a great opportunity to help inspire local people as well as visitors to the areas." The action gets underway at 09.30 with the Newham London Run, with over 400 junior runners getting their chance at 10.40 in the Junior Newham London Run. Entrants and spectators are reminded that the clocks go FORWARD one hour on Saturday night so there is one hour less to wait until the action starts! |
