Big name lines up to tackle the Richtersveld Wildrun - TheEd - 30-05-2014

Another big name in trail lines up to tackle the Richtersveld Wildrunâ„¢

Another top South African trail runner, Tracy Zunckel, has signed up to take on the inaugural 150km, four day Richtersveld Wildrun™, and in doing so has turned the heat up on the woman’s race.

Zunckel, ladies winner at the 2013 SA Ultra Trail Championships, Lesotho Ultra Trail and the Giant’s Cup, will be taking on the four-day, 150km race through the majestic mountain desert of the/Ai/Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Park from 04 to 07 June 2014. Her biggest competition is likely to come from arguably the biggest name in women’s trail running in South Africa - Katya Soggot.

Katya has been on fire of late, setting records in the Bat Run and the extremely tough Helderberg Mountain Challenge. Katya is particularly at home in rough, technical mountain terrain and so the landscape at Richtersveld is right up her alley. Tracy, however, hails from the big mountain running area of the Drakensberg. Those big climbs, long distances and higher altitudes will certainly come in handy in her quest for glory.

“We are really looking forward to watching this epic battle unfold. We know Katya well from her exploits in the Cape and she is a tough competitor” said Owen Middleton, Managing Director of the events company Wildrunner, “Tracy on the other hand has proven her mettle in the ultra-distance so might arguably fare better over the four days – next week will reveal all!”

In the men’s race its Zimbabwean born trail legend Bernard Rukadza against American endurance specialist Matt Hart. “We invited Matt out to the Richtersveld Wildrun™ as one of America’s leading running journalists, only to find out the man has seen the podium on a number of ultra-distance races in America!” said Owen.

One thing is for sure though; having the racing this hot in both the men’s and ladies competition at the inaugural Richtersveld Wildrun™ will almost certainly set the bar very high for years to come.

The 150km race starts in the remote Northern Cape border town of Sendelingsdrif on the 4th June at 08h00.
