Midwife delivers on time - TheEd - 18-10-2013 On the first day of the 11-day World Masters Athletics Track & Field Championships in Porto Alegre, Brazil, Jane Pidgeon, a Midwife from Notts, was the first of the 134-strong British team to strike gold racing to a clear victory in the W40-44 Age Category 8km undulating cross-country in 33.30sec. Sharyn Ramage, Wendy Doxey and Scott Lynn Marr raced to a team bronze in the W50-54 age group. In arguable one of the toughest races, the M60-64 where 57 seasoned runners from 22 countries battled for supremacy, David Oxland and John Shapland were well placed 3rd and 4th behind the Russian and Dutch pacemakers for three of the four lap circuit. Shapland in his first ever World Masters Athletics Championships broke away from Oxland in the home straight to take the individual bronze and lead the team to another bronze as David Proffitt closed in 31st. The first day of the Heptathlon and Decathlon brought mixed fortunes for the British multi-eventers. A team of Observers from the Rio de Janerio Olympic Organising Committee are monitoring the first ever World Athletic Championships to be held in South America. |
