Gun Run 2013 this weekend - TheEd - 09-10-2013

A record field of close to 18 500 participants will line up outside the Cape Town Stadium on Sunday 13 October to take part in this year’s OUTsurance 94.5 Kfm Gun Run. The half marathon and 10km have attracted fields of 7 130 and 7 490 respectively, while the 5km has just over 2 850 pre-entries.

“We are thrilled that this race just keeps on growing and that it has attracted yet another record field. As of Monday the entry count was sitting at 17 200, with some entries still to be processed, and we are expecting over 1 000 people to enter the 5km on race day,” said Atlantic Athletic Club’s race director Tony Breslin.

5km entries will be taken at the various number collection points and on the morning of the race from the start in Fritz Sonnenberg Road. Participants in the 21km half marathon and 10km run/walk must collect their race numbers from the collection point they chose when they entered.

These points are at Sportsmans Warehouse in Rondebosch, Tygervalley, Tokai, West Coast and at Canal Walk and Somerset Mall, as well as at Hamiltons Rugby Club in Green Point and are open on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 October. Substitutions, upgrades and downgrades will also be done at registration for a fee of R20. No upgrades from the 5km will be allowed.

Participants are also encouraged to visit the website thegunrun.co.za, which will provide them with information on where to park, route maps and general race details to ensure they have a great race experience. Contact Top Events on 021-511 7130 for all the details.

The City of Cape Town will be providing My CiTi buses for the event and runners are encouraged to park at the Grand Parade and catch the bus to the start. Buses from outside the finish will take participants back to their cars after the event. The buses will run from 5:30am through until 12pm and are free to all participants.

The half marathon starts at 07h00, the 10km at 08h00 and the 5km at 09h00 and the Cape Field Artillery will provide the gun, which councillor Grant Pascoe will fire to start the half marathon. Ward councillor for the Atlantic Seaboard, Beverley Schafer will be at the finish to fire the cut-off gun at 10h30. The regiment and firing of the gun have been an integral part of the event since 2003. Traditionally the event started at 09h00 and runners had to finish the event before the noonday gun was fired from Signal Hill.

Formed in 1857, the Cape Field Artillery is the oldest operational volunteer artillery regiment in the British Commonwealth. The regiment has a close relationship with the City and fires the 21-gun salute at the opening of Parliament.

There are some great lucky draw prizes up for grabs, including a cheque for R20 000 and a flat screen TV, plus loads of entertainment at the finish courtesy of Kfm, who will be broadcasting live from the finish.
