Meseret Hailu for Amsterdam Marathon 2012 - TheEd - 12-10-2012

The newly crowned half marathon world champion, Meseret Hailu, will be in action at the 37th TCS Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday, October 21. The 22-year-old Ethiopian surprisingly bagged the world title in Kavarna, Bulgaria last weekend. She surpassed her personal best by two minutes to 1.08.55. Caroline Kilel is also set to run in the Netherlands’ biggest marathon. The Kenyan ran the marathon once before in 2.22.36, when she won the Boston Marathon.

The battle for the world title has never been as exciting as it was last weekend. It remained exciting till the very end. Hailu passed her compatriot Feyse Tadese in the final metres and managed to win narrowly. The young athlete, who is trained by Getane Tessema, has already successfully run in a Le Champion event. She won the PWN Egmond Half Marathon this year in the sixth fastest time ever (1.11.18). Her best performance at the marathon is 2.27.15. She achieved this time this year in the Prague Marathon, where she finished third.

The Kenyan Caroline Kilel is an experienced marathon runner and a danger to the one year old course record of 2.22.08. She has several marathons to her name. The latest was the Boston Marathon in 2011, where she established her personal best of 2.22.36. Six months earlier she won the Frankfurt marathon (2.23.25).

The start of the TCS Amsterdam Marathon will take place on Sunday, October 21 at 9:30 am in the Olympic Stadium. A record number of over 37,000 participants will start in the various distances. 13,000 runners will take part in the classic distance, making the TCS Amsterdam Marathon by far the largest marathon in the Netherlands.
