LJ van Zyl finished sixth in his heat, crossing the line in 50.31sec. The heat was won by reigning Olympic champion, Angelo Taylor, in 49.29sec. More Olympic athletics action this weekend Apart from Khotso Mokoena competing in the qualifying round of the menââ¬â¢s long jump tonight, other action this weekend includes Oscar Pistorius in the menââ¬â¢s 400m. Mokoena will have a chance of competing in the menââ¬â¢s long jump final on Saturday at 20:55, should he get through in tonightââ¬â¢s qualifying rounds. Pistorius will make his Olympic debut and history, as the first athlete to compete in both the Paralympic and Olympic Games. He will line up in the first heat of the menââ¬â¢s 400m on Saturday morning at 11:35. He recorded 45.20sec in Pretoria at the Gauteng North Championships on 17 March, but could not get close to the time again later in the season. His best was 45.52sec at the Africa Senior Championships in Benin, where he won the silver medal. The 18 year-old, Luguelin Santos (DOM), has the fastest time in the heat, 44.45sec, clocked in Hengelo, Netherlands on 27 May but most of the other athletes in this heat have also run faster times than Pistorius this season. Should Pistorius make it past the heats in the menââ¬â¢s 400m, he will line up in the semi-final on Sunday at 21:40. |
