Valerie Adams impressive in Rome - TheEd - 05-06-2012 ITALY IAAF Diamond League Golden Gala Meeting, Rome ââ¬â 31 May 2012 Valerie Adams was emphatic in victory in her first competition leading into the London Olympic Games and her defence of the Olympic title. Adams sent the shot out to 21.03m setting a meeting record and improved in leading the world for 2012. Her best throw of the competition came in round four and was just 21cm short of her personal best set in winning her third world title in Daegu Korea last year. Five of her six throws would have won the competition with Lijiao Gong of China finishing second with 19.72m and arch rival Nadzeya Ostapchuk of Belarus third with 19.58m. Ostapchuk, winner of the opening Diamond League contest in Doha, managed only the one valid throw in the opening round and then clutched her left knee after every other attempt. ââ¬ÅThis is a great start into the season for me, Iââ¬â¢m pretty happy with that seeing it is Olympic year, itââ¬â¢s great to dominate. My training has been going very well. I am really surprised that I cracked 21 metres at the season opener. Since the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul I have been staying in Magglingen (Switzerland) with my Swiss coach Jean Pierre Eggerââ¬Â, said Adams. ââ¬ÅIt is the best thing thatââ¬â¢s ever happened to my training and obviously shows with my performances,ââ¬Â she added. |
