Khomanani Primary school wins Schools Challenge - TheEd - 11-11-2011

The Soweto based Khomani Primary School claimed victory in the 5km Schools Challenge at the Soweto Marathon that took place on Sunday, 6 November 2011. Amongst the 18 schools that participated in the challenge, they finished on top with 259 children finishing the race.

In order to promote the development of athletes at a young age, especially at school level, the initiative to get schools to participate in the 5km fun run came to light. In order to win the schools challenge, it was not about the number of athletes participating or the position at the finish line, but the most athletes finishing the race that made a school eligible to win.

The prize money involved was R5000 to the winning school while 2nd and 3rd place received R3000 and R2000 respectively. Khomanani Primary School won while Diodi Primary School finished 2nd with 112 kids completing the race. Third place went to Thembalethu Primary Shool with 66 kids crossing the line.

One school, Tindou Children Centre, travelled all the way from Venda to be a part of the challenge. According to Hezekiel Sepeng, in charge of the development of athletes, the day was a big success as more than 1500 kids participated in the Schools Challenge.

The 5km fun run was also open to the general public.
