The Soweto Marathon 5km fun run - TheEd - 01-11-2011

For the athletes not ready for the big marathon yet or those simply interested in social running, the 5km fun run at the Soweto Marathon on 6 November is exactly the thing to do. Not only does it give runners, old and young alike, the opportunity to get together on the day, but also to be part of the Soweto Marathon experience.

This year’s 5km fun run will host some of the most beautiful women in Soweto as the 32 finalists of the Miss Soweto beauty pageant confirmed their participation on the day. As part of the entertainment, a beauty parade by these beauties will take place on the main stage just before prize giving. Thereafter they will assist in handing out medals to the athletes.

Anybody interested in running the 5km fun run can join us on the race day as entries for this race will be taken on the day. The race will start at 08h30 at the Expo Centre at Nasrec.

The 5km fun run also hosts the schools challenge competition. Schools can bring athletes and show their talent by competing and challenging other schools. The school with the most athletes finishing the race will receive R5000 while 2nd place and 3rd place will walk away with R3000 and R2000 respectively for their schools. This challenge is primarily focused on, but not restricted to, primary schools. Schools may enter on the day or Hezekiel Sepeng can be contacted for more information on 011880 5800 or hezekiel@athleticssa.co.za.

Other races on the day will be the 42.2km, 10km run/walk, 10km professional walk and a 10km wheelchair race for disabled athletes. Athletics South Africa will still accept entries for these events.

Athletes that still wish to compete may enter but won’t receive a goodie bag or T-shirt. Entries will cost R140 for the 42.2km and R90 for the 10km race/walk, professional walk and the 10km wheelchair race. Athletes without a permanent license will also have to attain a temporary license at an additional R30 for the marathon and R15 for all 10km races.

Athletes that missed the deadline for any reason may bring cash to a number collection venue and enter on the spot. These entries will also be considered as late entries. Number collection will only take place at Pilditch Stadium in Tshwane (31 October and 1 November), ASA offices in Houghton Estate (2 and 3 November) and at the Johannesburg Expo Centre situated in Nasrec (4 and 5 November). Nothing will be handed out on race day. These must be collected between 09h00 and 19h00.

Entry forms are still available online at http://www.athletics.org.za. You will also find them at at the offices of Central Gauteng Athletics, The Sweatshop Dunkeld, Bedford Runner in Bedfordview and the Orlando Community Hall.

The Soweto Marathon is made possible by Energade who will provide energy drinks and water to all athletes on the day, Netcare 911 as the official supplier of medical services, the Johannesburg Expo Centre as the official start and finish venue of the Soweto Marathon as well as the City of Johannesburg, official partner of the event.
