Cherobon-Bawcom wins USA 10k Champs - TheEd - 14-10-2011

BOSTON - A day after winning the B.A.A. Half Marathon, Janet Cherobon-Bawcom (Rome, Ga.) dominated the field at the USA Women's 10K Championship Monday in Boston, running 32 minutes, 47 seconds for her third national road title of the year (also 10 mile and 20K). With the win, Cherobon-Bawcom, 33, also secured the women's 2011 USA Running Circuit grand prix crown and won her fifth straight U.S. road race.

While unseasonably warm conditions met the women's field for the 35th Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women, the lead pack went straight to work with an opening mile of 5:08.

Cherobon-Bawcom positioned herself at the front of the pack which included two-time USA 10K champion Katie McGregor (Minneapolis, Minn.), Kim Conley (West Sacramento, Calif.), Emily Brown (Minneapolis, Minn.), Tera Moody (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and international athletes Bekelch Bedada (Ethiopia) and Megan Brown (Canada).

Nearing two miles, Bedada, Cherobon-Bawcom and Conley opened a 10 meter gap on McGregor and Moody with Cherobon-Bawcom clearly in control.

Surging away from Bedada and Conley at three miles, Cherobon-Bawcom quickly opened a 10 meter lead. She passed 5K in 16:12 and extended her lead to 17 seconds at four miles, as McGregor overtook Conley to move into second.

Cherobon-Bawcom cruised to the finish to celebrate a 29 second victory over McGregor, while Conley held on for third, running 33:35.

The USA Women's 10K Championships was also the final stop on the 2011 USA Running Circuit (USARC) and paid a total of $28,450 in U.S. prize money with national champion Cherobon-Bawcom earning $7450 plus she also won $4000 in Open prize money.

With her 10K victory, Cherobon-Bawcom also claimed first in the women's USARC standings with 45 points (worth $6000) followed by GP runner-up McGregor (41 points - $4000) and Jen Rhines (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.) third with 30 points ($2500).

The men's circuit concluded last week with Ben True (Hanover, N.H.) taking the GP title with 60 points.

The 2011 USARC, a USA Track & Field road series, featured USA Championships from one mile to the half-marathon and attracted the country's best distance runners. The circuit had ten events for men and nine for women and for the first time in 2011 included the USA Cross Country Championships.
