Cornel Fredericks and LJ van Zyl both qualified for the final of the 400m hurdles on day 4 of the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. This comes after both athletes took second place in their groups to automatically qualify. The day was once again dominated by hot, humid temperatures reaching 32 degrees.

Cornel Fredericks was the first to compete and delivered an outstanding performance, beating both of Van Zyl’s American archrivals, Angelo Taylor and Jeshua Anderson. Fredericks paced himself well and came through in the last 100m, recording 48.83sec. The former silver medalist, Javier Culson (PUR), took the honours in 48.52sec to move to the finals. Angelo Taylor will also be seen in the final as he qualified with a fastest time (48.86sec).

The South African record holder and world number one, LJ van Zyl, joined Fredericks in the final when he crossed the line in 49.05sec. Bershawn Jackson finished ahead of Van Zyl in 48.80sec.
