The popular Peninsula Marathon returns to the traditional route that earned it the reputation as ââ¬ËAfricaââ¬â¢s Fastest Marathonââ¬â¢. The 2011 edition of the Old Mutual Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon qualifier will be run between Green Point and Simonââ¬â¢s Town on 20 February.
After two years of going over Red Hill due to the World Cup, next year the Peninsula will start at 5.15am in Main Road, opposite the Cape Town Stadium in Green Point, go through the city, follow Main Road through the Southern Suburbs and end at the Naval Sports Grounds in Simonââ¬â¢s Town.
For those who want something less taxing thereââ¬â¢s the Peninsula Half Marathon, which starts at 7am at the Bergvliet Sports Club in Childrenââ¬â¢s Way before joining the 42.2km route heading South in Main Road.
Roger McCallum, the Chairperson of the organising club, Celtic Harriers, said: ââ¬ËThis is an ideal qualifier for those runners wanting to get a good seeding for the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon and Comrades. Itââ¬â¢s a fantastic route and we have put measures in place to ensure that every runner is well provided for in terms of water and Coke during the race. Club stalwart and long-time organiser of the Two Oceans, Chet Sainsbury, and his dedicated team of helpers will take charge of the route ensuring that refreshments stations are well stocked. So runners can look forward to another great Peninsula Marathon, the 44th running of the event. Please enter early, and best wishes for a fantastic run. We have already put our order in for perfect weather but there may just be a touch of windââ¬â¢
