MIAMI - Because Karhu mean's "bear" in Finnish, the Karhu 5K, a division of the 13.1 Marathonî - Miami Beach, invites racers to come out on Sunday, March 6 and try to "Beat the Karhu Bear" to win a free pair of running shoes.
The Karhu Bear is from Helsinki, Finland and is expected to run the 5K in the neighborhood of 20 minutes.
Any runner who "beats the Karhu bear" during the 5K will be presented with a FREE pair of Karhu running shoes of their choice. Runner's who accomplish the feat will be able to pick up their shoes at Runner's Depot in Davie or Aventura.
The bear just woke up from hibernation and is ready to run. He's friendly, but he's competitive. Not until after the race will he pose for pictures with all runners.
The Karhu 5K will start shortly after the 13.1 and will run North on Ocean Drive and wind through South Beach before finishing at Lummus Park at the same finish line as the 13.1 Marathonî - Miami Beach.
First-timer friendly while also perfect for avid runners, the Karhu 5K will offer a scenic and festive run along a closed course with the same fully-supported aid stations, live entertainment, and medals for all finishers that runners experience in the 13.1 Marathonî - Miami Beach.
Online registration for the Karhu 5K is open at 131marathon.com. Karhu 5K registration is only $20 until March 3 and then $25 on March 4 and at in-person packet pickup on March 5.
