7 June - There are two meetings taking place tonight where many South African athletes are competing, some looking for Olympic Qualifiers and others using it as preparation for the Africa Senior Championships in Benin from 27 June to 1 July as well as the Olympic Games in London from 3-12 August.
International Meeting - Rhede, Germany
In the long jump both the menââ¬â¢s and womenââ¬â¢s events will have South African athletes competing. In the menââ¬â¢s event, SA champion Zarck Visser will compete at his fifth event of his European campaign with his best result 8.06m in Dessau. Visserââ¬â¢s best on local front was 8.15m in Pretoria on 5 May.
Janice Josephs, along with Carla Marais, Lynique Prinsloo and Monja Goosen are in the line-up for the womenââ¬â¢s long jump. Prinsloo along with Josephs has been selected to represent South Africa at the Africa Senior Championships in Benin.
Thuso Mpuang and Lebogang Moeng will line up in the menââ¬â¢s 100m as well as the 200m. Both athletes have reached the 20.55sec mark for qualifying in the 200m once and just a single clocking at the required time will mean qualifying for the Olympic Games.
Simon Magakwe will also be competing in Oslo in the menââ¬â¢s 100m.
Ofentse Mogawane, Willem de Beer and Shaun de Jager will be running in the menââ¬â¢s 400m in Rhede. Amongst these athletes, Mogawane is the closest to the A- standard with his best this season 45.54sec (the standard being 45.30sec).
Other athletes to compete include Charlene Potgieter and Matsie Dikotla in the womenââ¬â¢s triple jump, Estie Wittstock and Rorisang Ramonnye in the womenââ¬â¢s 400m and Carina Horn in the womenââ¬â¢s 100m and 200m.
