I feel like I'm always getting a better feel for the cycles. But I could use some clarification on backing off at the right time. Do you mean in response to illness/injury, or in some aspect of timing for peak fitness?
My general approach is pretty simplistic, which is to try to improve my performance in the quality workouts each time through the cycle.
