A knee injury has forced marathon world-record holder Patrick Makau (Kenya) to withdraw from the BMW BERLIN MARATHON to be run on September 29. “I intended to attack my own world record in Berlin but now the first thing on my mind is to fully recover from this injury so I can return to training”, said Makau. He had earlier consulted the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi where he was diagnosed with an inflammation in his left knee and ordered to stop running completely and rest the knee until the inflammation subsides. A duel of two champions
The TUI Marathon Hannover will see a duel of two champions on 5th May: While Kenya’s defending champion Joseph Kiptum returns to the race South Africa’s Lusapho April has also been signed by the organisers. April had won in 2011. It will be the target in the women’s race to finally improve the course record to a time well under 2:30. Hahner sisters, next marathon generation
Anna Hahner was the runner in the national focus after German marathon races in Duesseldorf and Hamburg on the weekend. Only 22 years old she ran a fine debut,placing sixth at the METRO GROUP Marathon Duesseldorf with 2:30:14. She missed the national qualifying time for the Olympics by a mere 14 seconds but there is still hope that the German selectors will be kind on this occasion and reward her with an Olympic slot.
