DAEGU – Jessica Zelinka of London, Ont., finished ninth in the grueling two day heptathlon with 6268 points, registering the best Canadian finish in the seven discipline event ever at a World Championship. Heading into the final event of 800-metres Jessica was in 12th but her time of 2:12.62 added some valuable points to her score. “I have it in me to get on the podium I just need to put it all together in one consistent heptathlon; that is the most important thing I am taking away from this.” [Read more…]

OTTAWA – Athletics Canada named today a contingent of 32 athletes who will travel to Daegu, South Korea for the 2011 World Championships in Athletics.  The biggest sporting event of 2011 will feature athletes from over 200 countries converging for nine days of competition on a state of the art Mondo SportFlex Super X track.  The World Championships run August 27 through September 4 with the Canadian team beginning departures on August 14 for a final preparation camp in Changwon City, South Korea. OTTAWA – Athletics Canada sent the Panamerican Junior Championship team to Miramar, Florida with one simple objective, surpass the 13 podiums earned at the 2009 staging of this event.  “I am very pleased with this team; they achieved their objective under less then optimal conditions.  The athletes kept their focus through travel delays and extreme heat and humidity, responding with 14 medals, surpassing the 2009 medal count,” explains Head Coach Carla Nicholls. OTTAWA – The first edition of the National Track League (NTL) wrapped up in Toronto on Wednesday with the crowing of the first ever NTL champions at the Toronto International Track + Field Games.  Each NTL winner took home a beautiful glass trophy and a cash prize of $4,000.  Final performance scores were tabulated and today Dylan Armstrong from Kamloops, B.C., and Phylicia George of Markham, Ont., have been named top NTL athletes for 2011.  [Read more…]

Calgary, Alta. – In the heptathlon Coquitlam B.C.’s Ruky Abdulai (Valley Royals) won her first Canadian Championship with a personal best and World Championship A standard of 6150 points. Just 18 points behind with 6132 was Calgary, Alta.’s Jessica Zelinka (unattached). Natasha Miller (Valley Royals) of Abbotsford, B.C. finished in third with 5581 points. [Read more…]

Victoria, BC – The Q’s Victoria Track – 77 year old Helly Visser of Vancouver, BC smashed the 75-79 age-group World Mile Record at the 4th meet of The Q’s Victoria Track Series. She bested the previous record by 10 seconds in 7:47.

Visser said, “I recently ran 8:05 in Calgary at a meet there, the World Record is 7:57, I don’t know if I can do it, but I am going to try”. She did, she ran 7:47. The first lap was well ahead of pace and announcer Paul O’Callaghan got the crowd cheering for her and she hung onto the World Record pace throughout. OTTAWA – Kamloops, BC’s Dylan Armstrong remains undefeated this season in the shot put claiming the title today at the Golden Gala Diamond League meeting in Rome, Italy.  Armstrong’s fifth throw of 21.60-metres was enough to secure the win and earn 4 more points in the Diamond Race. [Read more…]
