Derek Drouin of Corunna, Ont., won bronze in the men’s high jump and set a Canadian Record of 2.38-metres while Matthew Hughes of Oshawa, Ont., placed sixth in the 3000-metres steeplechase final in a Canadian Record time of 8:11.64. Ahmed best ever Canadian finish
Moscow – A number of Canadian athletes recorded strong performances on the first day of competition at the 2013 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championship in Athletics. Today’s Canadian highlights in Moscow, Russia include a best ever finish by a Canadian at the World Championships by St. Catharines, Ont., Mohammed Ahmed. Damian Warner of London, Ont., performed well in the first five of ten events in the decathlon to sit in fourth place while Aaron Brown of Toronto, Ont., and Gavin Smellie of Etobicoke, Ont., advanced to the semi-finals of the 100-metres. Zelinka achieves in Daegu
DAEGU – Jessica Zelinka of London, Ont., finished ninth in the grueling two day heptathlon with 6268 points, registering the best Canadian finish in the seven discipline event ever at a World Championship. Heading into the final event of 800-metres Jessica was in 12th but her time of 2:12.62 added some valuable points to her score. “I have it in me to get on the podium I just need to put it all together in one consistent heptathlon; that is the most important thing I am taking away from this.” [Read more…]

Athletics Canada names team for World Championships in Korea
OTTAWA – Athletics Canada named today a contingent of 32 athletes who will travel to Daegu, South Korea for the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. The biggest sporting event of 2011 will feature athletes from over 200 countries converging for nine days of competition on a state of the art Mondo SportFlex Super X track. The World Championships run August 27 through September 4 with the Canadian team beginning departures on August 14 for a final preparation camp in Changwon City, South Korea. [Read more…]
