OTTAWA– Athletics Canada officially named today the athletes who will travel to Chiba, Japan for the 24th International Chiba Ekiden Road Race Relay on November 23. Marathoners have strong showing in difficult conditions
For the first time since the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games Canada fielded a full men’s marathon entry at the Olympic Games. The trio of Reid Coolsaet of Hamilton, Ont., Eric Gillis of Antigonish, N.S., and Dylan Wykes of Kingston, Ont., did not disappoint in very tough conditions. Coolsaet wins Half in Vancouver
VANCOUVER, BC – 06/24/2012 – Olympic-bound athlete Reid Coolsaet finished first at the Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon today, in his final run before the 2012 London Olympics. Elite runner Kip Kangogo and Olympic athlete Eric Gillis finished second place and third place respectively in an exciting finish to today’s half-marathon race. The Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon & 5K race brought out more than 7,000 runners to the city’s scenic Stanley Park where thousands of spectators cheered and more than $630,000 was raised for 60 local charities. Ottawa – For the first time since 1996 Canada is sending three male marathoners to the Olympic Games. Reid Coolsaet of Hamilton, Ont., Eric Gillis of Antigonish, N.S., and Dylan Wykes of Kingston, Ont., all dipped below Athletics Canada’s Olympic marathon standard of 2:11:29 before the qualifying deadline of April 22. Coolsaet Close to Olympic Berth
Reid Coolsaet never imagined he’d be on the brink of an Olympic Games berth when he ran cross country for Hamilton’s Westdale Secondary School back two decades ago.
A mediocre athlete, whose goal was nothing more than joining his girlfriend in qualifying for the provincial high school cross country championships, Coolsaet finished 18th in the 1997 race. In the absence of scholarship offers he joined coach Dave Scott-Thomas at the University of Guelph. The partnership has certainly paid off. [Read more…]
