OTTAWA – Caroline Morin-Houde of St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Que., and Shaina Harrison of Aurora, Ont., both won medals on the first day of track and field action at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Isle of Man. Morin-Houde and Harrison won silver and bronze respectively in the girls 100-metres, both stopping the clock in 11.81 seconds. Ball named for Parapan AM Games
(Orillia, ON) – Rick Ball can now set his competitive sights on Mexico this fall following a big announcement by Athletics Canada.

Armstrong takes Silver in Daegu
DAEGU – Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, B.C., is the silver medalist in the shot put at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea. His fourth throw of 21.64 metres secured him Canada’s first ever medal in a throwing event at a World Championship. “I’m happy to bring this medal back to Canada and my community in Kamloops. I’m really happy; it’s a good setup going into London. I am going to keep listening to my coach, I have to train tomorrow, and the objective is a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics.” [Read more…]
Zelinka achieves in Daegu
DAEGU – Jessica Zelinka of London, Ont., finished ninth in the grueling two day heptathlon with 6268 points, registering the best Canadian finish in the seven discipline event ever at a World Championship. Heading into the final event of 800-metres Jessica was in 12th but her time of 2:12.62 added some valuable points to her score. “I have it in me to get on the podium I just need to put it all together in one consistent heptathlon; that is the most important thing I am taking away from this.” [Read more…]

Smith hired as Olympic Development Coach
Ottawa – Athletics Canada announced today that Glenn Smith from Calgary, Alta., has been hired to the position of Olympic Development Coach. Coolsaet Close to Olympic Berth
Reid Coolsaet never imagined he’d be on the brink of an Olympic Games berth when he ran cross country for Hamilton’s Westdale Secondary School back two decades ago.
A mediocre athlete, whose goal was nothing more than joining his girlfriend in qualifying for the provincial high school cross country championships, Coolsaet finished 18th in the 1997 race. In the absence of scholarship offers he joined coach Dave Scott-Thomas at the University of Guelph. The partnership has certainly paid off. [Read more…]
Canada set to host 2015 Panamerican Juniors
OTTAWA – Athletics Canada is pleased to announce that they have secured the rights to host the 2015 Panamerican Junior Athletics Championships, held every two years, the championships stack up the best under-20 competition for junior aged athletes outside of the IAAF World Junior Championships. Athletics Canada names team for World Championships in Korea
OTTAWA – Athletics Canada named today a contingent of 32 athletes who will travel to Daegu, South Korea for the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. The biggest sporting event of 2011 will feature athletes from over 200 countries converging for nine days of competition on a state of the art Mondo SportFlex Super X track. The World Championships run August 27 through September 4 with the Canadian team beginning departures on August 14 for a final preparation camp in Changwon City, South Korea. [Read more…]
