CALGARY – Athletes Charmaine Crooks of Vancouver, B.C., Milt Ottey of Toronto, Ont., Guillaume LeBlanc of Sept-Îles, Que., Dave Steen of New Westminster, B.C., and Bruny Surin of Montreal, Que., were enriched into Athletics Canada’s Hall of Fame this morning to officially kick off Hall of Fame Friday at the 2012 Canadian Track and Field trials. The event was hosted by Scott Russell of CBC Sports Weekend and also saw the induction of Bob Adams of Saskatoon, Sask., in the builder category, Lyle Sanderson of Saskatoon, Sask., in the coach category and Myrtle Cook of Toronto, Ont., Fred Foot from Toronto, Ont., and Harry Jerome of Prince Albert, Sask., were honoured in memoriam. VANCOUVER, BC – 06/24/2012 – Olympic-bound athlete Reid Coolsaet finished first at the Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon today, in his final run before the 2012 London Olympics. Elite runner Kip Kangogo and Olympic athlete Eric Gillis finished second place and third place respectively in an exciting finish to today’s half-marathon race. The Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon & 5K race brought out more than 7,000 runners to the city’s scenic Stanley Park where thousands of spectators cheered and more than $630,000 was raised for 60 local charities. Jessica Zelinka of London, Ont., finished in sixth place at the IAAF Combined Events Challenge Hypo-Meeting in Gotzis, Austria this past weekend.  The athlete who lives and trains in Calgary amassed a score of 6393 points in the seven event heptathlon, surpassing the Olympic A+ standard.  Zelinka’s performance stands as the second best all-time heptathlon score by a Canadian athlete behind her Canadian record of 6490 set at the 2008 Olympic Games.  Zelinka now needs a top three finish at the Track and Field Trials to secure her spot on the 2012 Olympic Games team.   [Read more…]
