OTTAWA – Caroline Morin-Houde of St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Que., and Shaina Harrison of Aurora, Ont., both won medals on the first day of track and field action at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Isle of Man. Morin-Houde and Harrison won silver and bronze respectively in the girls 100-metres, both stopping the clock in 11.81 seconds. A review of the photo finish was necessary to establish silver and bronze.
In the boys 100-metre final Drelan Bramwell of Sarnia, Ont., finished fourth and Keefer Joyce of Kelowna, B.C., finished fifth. Bramwell’s time of 10.60 was milliseconds ahead of Joyce’s 10.63.
Cassandra Jones of Toronto, Ont., advanced to tomorrow’s 400-metres final clocking in at 57.56 in the semis. Denray Jean-Jacques of Ottawa, Ont., advanced to the semi finals running the one-lap race in a time of 50.33, he did not advance from the semis to the final.
In the boys 1500-metres both Christian Gravel of Vancouver, B.C., and Troy Smith of Grimsby, Ont., advanced to the final. Gravel crossed the line in 4:01.50 finishing fourth in his heat, Smith finished fifth in his heat with a time of 4:01.95.
In the girls 2000-metre steeplechase final Adrianne Erdman of Calgary, Alta., finished fifth and Mireille Aylwin-Descôteaux of Montreal, Que., was sixth in 7:14.58 and 7:17.81 respectively.
Asianna Covington of Surrey, B.C., finished in fifth place in the discus throw final with a performance of 43.52 metres. Covington will compete tomorrow in the hammer throw.
