OTTAWA – Track and field fans in Winnipeg, Man., were treated to a great weekend of competition with the Canadian Junior Championships taking place Friday through Sunday at University Stadium on the campus of the University of Manitoba.
Heading into the event World Juniors teammates Adam Keenan of Victoria, B.C., and Jordan Young of Windsor, Ont., were set to go head to head in the boys hammer throw. The boys did not disappoint with Keenan coming out on top to claim gold with a new Canadian junior championship record of 71.32-metres. Young finished second with a mark of 63.79-metres and also took gold in both the men’s shot put and discus throw coming away from the event with an impressive three medals.
Also fresh off the World Junior Championship was Winnipeg’s own Julia Zrinyi and Brandon McBride of Windsor, Ont. Zrinyi thrilled her home province fans winning gold in the girls 800-metres in a time of 2:07.61. McBride capped off his impressive season with gold and a new Canadian junior championship record in the boys 400-metres of 46.25 seconds.
