OTTAWA – Athletics Canada is pleased to announce that the team representing Canada at the 2012 NACAC under 23 Athletics Championships will be fully funded, up to 43 individuals. “The transition from junior to senior athlete is a difficult one, with this initiative we hope to remove financial barriers for athletes making this jump, said Rob Guy, Chief Executive Officer, Athletics Canada.
Guy adds, “The under 23 age group is a high priority within our program, these athletes are our future stars. The opportunity for both athletes and coaches to acquire international experience is critical in their development within our high performance pathway.”
Athletics Canada’s objectives for the NACAC U23 team are to select the most competitive athletes born in 1990, 1991 or 1992 who are prepared to achieve seasonal best performances at the championships. Provide a positive international competitive and cultural experience to team members, and to prepare athletes for future success within the high performance program.
The official qualifying period for selection to this team opened April 1 and runs through to June 17. Selected athletes will stage in Calgary July 1 and 2 before departing to Mexico. The NACAC U23 Championships take place in Guanajuato, Mexico July 6 to 8.
