BARCELONA- Shawnacy Barber of Toronto, Ont., has won Canada’s first medal at the 2012 World Athletics Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Barber won bronze in the boys pole vault in a new Canadian junior record of 5.55-metres. Barber’s outstanding performance today places him second on the Canadian all-time list behind Douglas Wood’s 1991 performance of 5.61-metres.
In the boys discus final Jordan Young of Windsor, Ont., tossed 60.44-metres, good for 6th place.
Shai-Anne Davis of Richmond, B.C., finished seventh in her 200-metre semi final heat in a time of 24.23 seconds. Davis had qualified for the semi finals earlier in the day by way of a second place finish in her heat in 24.52. Isatu Fofanah of Edmonton, Alta., clocked 24.78 seconds for fifth in her opening heat, she did not advance to the semi finals.
In the boys 200-metres Marlon Laidlaw-Allen of Toronto, Ont., raced to a personal best of 20.98 seconds to automatically qualify for the semi final. In the semi final Laidlaw-Allen finished fifth in 21.27 and did not advance to the final.
After the first day of heptathlon competition Georgia Ellenwood of Langley, B.C., sits in 19th place with 3079 points. The second and final day of the heptathlon will comprise of the long jump, javelin throw and 800-metres.
In the morning session Taylor Farquhar of Belmont, Ont., and Sage Watson of Medicine Hat, Alta., automatically qualified for the semi finals in the girls 400-metre hurdles. Farquhar was second in heat two in a personal best time of 58.99 seconds. Watson won her heat in 59.38 seconds.
