Victoria, BC – The Q’s Victoria Track – 77 year old Helly Visser of Vancouver, BC smashed the 75-79 age-group World Mile Record at the 4th meet of The Q’s Victoria Track Series. She bested the previous record by 10 seconds in 7:47.

Visser said, “I recently ran 8:05 in Calgary at a meet there, the World Record is 7:57, I don’t know if I can do it, but I am going to try”. She did, she ran 7:47. The first lap was well ahead of pace and announcer Paul O’Callaghan got the crowd cheering for her and she hung onto the World Record pace throughout. May 29, 2011, OTTAWA – Under overcast skies this morning, a Kenyan man and Ethiopian woman took top spots trying out Ottawa Race Weekend’s new marathon route along crowd-filled Ottawa-Gatineau streets.

No records were broken this year as Laban Moiben of Trento, Kenya ran 2:10:17 in a sprint to the finish with Dereje Abera Ali of Briarcliff, Ethiopia, who trailed by only one second. No stranger to Ottawa, Moiben placed second in the 2010 Ottawa Marathon with 2:09:43. [Read more…]

May 28, 2011, OTTAWA – Unpredictable weather conditions today stayed favourable for the nearly 10,000 runners participating in the Ottawa Race Weekend 10K race at 6:30 p.m.

Ethiopians again took top spots in both the men’s and women’s races. Deriba Merga improved his third place finish in 2010 to finish first with 28:30. Dire Tune crossed at 31:43, her second consecutive Ottawa 10K win and about 30 seconds faster than 2010. It is also her second time finishing ahead of her male counterpart – women elite athletes started 3 minutes and 55 seconds ahead of the men. For her efforts she’ll take home $6,000 US for being lead women, and an additional $4,000 for being first to cross the finish line. [Read more…]

OTTAWA – Kamloops, BC’s Dylan Armstrong remains undefeated this season in the shot put claiming the title today at the Golden Gala Diamond League meeting in Rome, Italy.  Armstrong’s fifth throw of 21.60-metres was enough to secure the win and earn 4 more points in the Diamond Race. [Read more…]

Track and Field Games Super Saturday

OTTAWA – This coming Saturday, May 14th, four Canadian communities will host HERSHEY’S Track & Field Games Day in Canada events.  Hershey’s Track & Field Games Day in Canada selected events are targeted at youth aged participants and younger, typically hosted as part of a school or club event.  Hershey’s Track & Field Games is the largest youth activity program of its kind in North America and provides an entry point to sport and recreation through running, jumping and throwing.

The national athletics celebration was created as a way to raise awareness and participation in both the HERSHEY’S Track & Field Games program and grassroots athletics.

Dylan Armstrong wins at Doha Diamond League

DOHA, QATAR – Kamloops, BC’s Dylan Armstrong finished first today in Doha, Qatar at the 2011 Diamond League Opener.  The reigning Commonwealth Games champ placed first with a throw of 21.38-metres in the men’s shot put earning him 4 points and the early lead in the race to the Diamond.

Americans Reese Hoffa and Ryan Whiting placed second and third respectively with throws of 21.27 and 21.23-metres.

The next scheduled shot put competition as part of the Diamond League is set for May 26 in Rome, Italy.

Elmore places 9th in the 1500m

Malindi Elmore of Kelowna, BC finished 9th in the women’s 1500-metres clocking in at 4:11.79. Winning the race, and setting a new World Leading time of 4:03.00 was Anna Mishchenko of Ukraine.  Second went to Kenya’s Irene Jelagat in 4:04.89 and Siham Hilali of Morocco finished third in 4:05.18.

CBC Broadcast tomorrow

CBC will broadcast and stream action from the Doha Diamond League tomorrow, Saturday May 7, from 14:00-16:00ET.

More on the Diamond League

Each Diamond League discipline is contested in 7 of 14 Diamond League competitions where the top 3 finishers (per discipline/per competition) receive points.  In the final competition points are doubled. The winner at the end of the diamond race will be named the season’s top athlete and receives a diamond trophy and cash prize of $40,000 USD.

OTTAWA – The Canadian Half Marathon Championships are set for this Sunday in Montreal serving as the kick off to Athletics Canada’s 2011 Canadian Championship Series.  The Half Marathon Championships are hosted for the fourth consecutive year in conjunction with the Banque Scotia 21k de Montreal.  Organized and staged by Canada Running Series, the race on Sunday begins at 10:00am with the course looping through Parc Jean-Drapeau on both Ste-Helene and Notre Dame Islands. Marathon records tumble at ING Ottawa Marathon

Women and Wheelchair Marathon Records shattered at ING Ottawa Marathon … Record participation for 32nd Ottawa Race Weekend; Morrocan crowned male marathon champion

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – A 22-year old record was shattered in the women’s marathon today as Canadian Lioudmilla Kortchaguina crossed the finish line of the 2006 ING Ottawa Marathon with a new course – and personal – record with a time of 2:29:42. Ethiopian Moges Zebenaye (2:36:14) and Helena Loshanyang Kirprop of Kenya (2:37:43) followed. Tania Jones was the second Canadian to cross the finish line, and 4th overall with a time of 2:43:00. In the men’s category, Morrocan Abderrahime Bouramdane was declared champion with a time of 2:12:18. Fellow countryman Zaid Laaroussi (2:12:59) was second and Great Britain native Brad Poore (2:24:28) was third. Charles Bedley, from Toronto, was crowned the new Canadian champion as he finished fifth with a time of 2:27:58. [Read more…]

Tragic, devastating news, Emilie Mondor killed in car crash

It is with great sadness that Time-to-Run reports the tragic death of Canada’s fine athlete Emilie Mondor. Emilie Mondor, 25, died after a car crash Saturday, September 9th. Mondor was reportedly driving a compact car which overturned on Highway 417 in East Hawkesbury, Ontario. Mondor sustained life-threatining injuries in the crash, and died later in the evening after being transported to Ottawa Civic Hospital. [Read more…]
